The attention given to Virginia-Tech gunman Cho Seung-Hui’s rambling, rant-filled manifesto drew a mixed reaction Wednesday from Virginia Tech students and supporters gathered at the victims’ memorial on the campus Drillfield.

The scene at the impromptu memorial to Cho’s 32 victims was subdued on a cold-gray morning. Placards covered in messages had been moved under a tent to protect them from the weather.

Dan Goerlich, a Virginia Tech employee and 1994 graduate, said he had
“mixed emotions” about the release of the gunman’s video, images and written manifesto.

“On the one hand, in a way, it does what Cho wanted, which was to get his message out, to get him some notoriety,” he said. “On the other hand, as shameless as it is, it does answer some questions that people have.”

Gabrielle Minnich, a Virginia Tech graduate who has worked at the school since 1990, said she tried to avoid seeing the video release from Cho.

“I’ve seen little clips, and I’ve turned away, because I don’t think we need to focus on that,” she said. “I’m sorry it happened because it’s just prolonging the whole process we have to go through.”

Erin Millar, who drove from Roanoke, Va. with her husband, Jeff, to pay respects to the victims, said she believed NBC News, which received the package sent by the killer, should not have aired the material. Doing so, she said, is taking the focus where it belongs: on the victims of the tragedy.

“He’s getting exactly what he wanted,” she said. “Isn’t that exactly, as America, what we don’t want him to get?”

Millar wasn’t the only person unhappy with the coverage of the tragedy.

Behind the memorial, a 2-by-2-foot orange cardboard sign was affixed to a wall in front of Burruss Hall overnight reading, “VT stay strong, Media Stay Away.”

NBC, to be honest it's a tragedy at Va.Tech, but this country wants to forget about everything as soon as it happens. The people of the U.S. said the same thing about 9/11, but I think the whole Country needs to know and remember so we can try something new to prevent these things from happening. People don't remember or don't want to remember what it took for this country to get to where we are at today. My deepest sympathy to the families of the victims of the tragic happings at Va. Tech and the families of the victims of 9/11.

Congratulations NBC. You have sunk to a new low. After receiving this package from Cho you immediately turned it over to the authorities. Of course, you did. But not until you had made hundreds of copies. Now every news organization is running this garbage day and night. This is exactly what this lunatic wanted - his 15 minutes of fame. Well, he got it thanks to NBC. What this has done is completely take away from the true victims of this horific rampage. My hear aches for the families of the students and professors for they are now having to watch this crap constantly. Is there one news agency out there that will step up and do the right thing and quit airing all of this? I doubt it.

The FCC should pull NBC's license to broadcast!!! This is nothing but shameful exploitation!

Take this test. Name me a victim of the Columbine High School shooting? Name me one of the shooters? Enough said . NBC - Nightlty Bad Choice

NBC could have handled this whole package thing in a much better way, but all they cared about was ratings. They knew that people would watch even if they were disgusted with the station they would still watch. It's a sad fact and for NBC to exploit the public that way so soon after the shooting was imoral and wrong. It was an uncaring and unfeeling decision by the executives at NBC. They should have waited or not shown it at all, because there are small children everywhere that are seeing these images. You can't hide them from the kids because the pictures are everywhere....TV, newspapers, magazines...
NBC...How do you sleep at night knowing the affect of showing these images is having on the entire public...not just a portion of it?

It's a shame that NBC has chosen to air this material. It serves no purpose other than shock. To air this video when so many people are mourning is just disgraceful. How would you feel to lose a loved one and have someone else give all kinds of attention to their killer? You can guarantee that I won't be watching NBC anymore.

I disagree with most of the postings. I, like some others, have been looking at the clips and the postings hoping to see the inner workings of the mind of a killer. The video and manifesto are news. NBC was made apart of the story. I think either way, NBC was going to get blasted by one party or another. My heart goes out to all the victims of this senseless tragedy!!! May God Bless each on every one of you.

NBC immediately turned over the video and package to authorities. er....that is after duping the thing countless times, no doubt.

I have to agree with many of the comments... NBC (as most of the other mainstream news outlets) have exercised extremely poor judgement by playing so much of the horrific details of Cho's multi-media package.

You have played completely into his hands... playing his final "cards"; putting his sick, twisted thoughts in front of the world to see... over, and over, and over again.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

As someone totally unrelated to anyone involved I was aghast hearing that the video and pictures were available to anyone- it's been bad enough seeing his face every time I come online or turn on the news. My heart just breaks and I can't imagine the grief of the families and friends who are still living this nightmare- now being rubbed even more raw by this situation.

I, too, will be avoiding NBC at all costs due to this terrible choice they have made. You, NBC, have opened the flood gates for all other media to hunt and tear apart over and over and over this video and this man. What better way to show an utter lack of support and comprehension for the pain anyone involved in this is feeling? You have now made it gutwrenchingly clear how important your ego is compared to the hearts of so many.

Though his actions are certainly newsworthy, the Va. Tech mass executioner is not worthy of any coverage, especially photographs showing him aiming his weapons. I cannot imagine the torment families must be experiencing and to have this added on top of it really misses the boat of responsible journalism. It is time to STOP giving coverage to deranged individuals who perpetrate their evils upon society and START giving coverage to the innocent who suffer at their hands. NBC, shame on you for letting this mass murderer have any opportunity to promote his extreme sickness any more than he already has.

We need to use this as a wakup call to all School systems that take a trouble student lightly. We a student comes in with a problem the problem needs to be address by the School and not just shoved on the backs of others and saying it's not their problem. How many more student and teeachers need to be killed before we start holding the Schools responsible for these action. We are suppose to be safe at school and we are not. This comes from the lack of care of the school system.

NBC and Mr. Capus -

I am terribly ashamed of your decision to post these images and videos. Noone who is truly compassionate for the victims and their families would have given the podium to his cause. Whatever happened to integrity?

What NBC has done is to ensure that the next nutbag who wants to be famous will know where to send his ravings, with a guarantee that they will be aired as submitted. The kind of outrage that caused the grudging firing of a cash cow in Mr. Imus should now hit them where it hurts, in their pockets. If I thought corporations, or even Matt Lauer, could feel shame I would say, shame on you.

Congratulations NBC for achieving a new low in journalism. You have given this mad man exactly what he wanted. Undeserved notoriety and martyrdom which he NEVER deserved in the first place. The only this this killer deserves is a trial by his peers and the death penalty. Instead all you have done is fuel the fire in other individuals who have the same feelings of hopelessness and self doubt into doing something even more horrific in the future.

People who have these feeling should seek appropriate outlets such as therapy and counseling. Not ever resort to such a horrific end against people that they do not even know.

You think that if it was Brian Williams or Matt Lauer that was "executed" in cold blood, that NBC would have aired, thus oblidged, the killer's last wishes only hours from his grave. NOT!!!!!!!! It's been three days and the victims are not even buried yet. That is all that needs to be said. They don't care about the community, only ratings. TOTALLY DISGRACEFUL!!!!!!!!!!
NBC = No Basic Compassion

No one should be surprised by "the media" in this country. This was a horribly sick act & NBC & their media brethren decide to capitalize on it for ratings & $$$. Their insincere "explanation" on why they did this is textbook hypocrisy. This sick madman references the Columbine killers so now we wait until the next sick whack job mentions him. NBC & any media who've participated in this will ALL have blood on their hands. REMEMBER THE VICTIMS!!!

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!, NBC you have shown no respect to the victims and survivors. I too am boycotting your stations. NBC should be held accountable for this insensitive act, this is lower than what Imus did, you cannot justify what NBC has done.

what a sad commentary on our society that NBC justifies its airing of that horrific tape of Cho and his ramblings. It should never have been shown. Can you imagine what the parents are going through? SHame on you NBC!

We must understand that the media needs to report all news, weither we like to see it or not. NBC should show us the footage and the manafesto that Cho wrote, because it will give us all insight of what to look for in a trouble person so that maybe we can prevent something like this from happing again. NBC I say keep showing us so that we know what to do next time, because it will be a next time. It's only a matter of time.

Corporations have an insatiable apppetite for greater and greater wealth, and will say anything(however wrong),do anything(however wrong),and step on anything and anyone(however wrong)in order to achieve it for one reason and one reason only:to assure that their CEO's and other high ranking officers become obscenely rich. That's why this was put on the air.It will never change. And there it is in a nutshell.

My home page will be changed and I will never again tune in to NBC for ANY reason. The damage NBC has done is inestimable, irrevocable and unforgivable.

STOP it.. stop glorifying this freak and giving more ideas to those who have problems and can't think of anything better than to copycat... Stop show it over and over again.. there is enough grief.... find somehting positive and run with it.. let VT get back some digntiy... just leave it alone already...

I'm sick of reading all of the negative comments when the truth is that most of us want to know some insight into why this happened. If the diatribe that Cho sent to NBC can shed any light on why this event, or any other event like it, happened, then NBC has every right to air it. We cannot act like it never happened and completely ignore the situation because we only learn from the past and we can never forget the victims.

I aggree, I refuse to even look at this person. Does the media think he's a hero? NBC Stop showing the pictures of this killer...and tell the familys of the
Victims you're sorry for showing this material.
please stop!!!!
My prayers are with the familys who lost love ones because of this evil
