We had a very surreal moment over a quick dinner at a pub in Blacksburg, Va., tonight.
Correspondent Don Teague and I entered the restaurant to grab a bite to eat and see if we could find a TV to watch NBC Nightly News. Inside music was playing, beer was flowing and pool balls were flying. On the surface, it seemed like a typical happy hour in a typical college town. But, then it was 6:30 p.m. and someone at a nearby table asked the waiter if one of the TV channels could be changed to NBC.
Within five minutes, the entire bar scene had turned somber. Four more TVs were turned to NBC and the rock and roll music overhead was turned off. All eyes silently watched the latest news.
A woman at a table behind us started to cry as she watched story after story of a place very near and dear to her. We caught eyes and she knew that Don and I worked for NBC by the peacock badge around our necks. As we paid our tab and left, we said what little we could to express our grief, "We're very sorry for the loss in your community and bless you."

As officials, students and families struggle to come to terms with the tragedy at Virginia Tech, a team of MSNBC.com reporters and editors and NBC News producers and correspondents is on the scene.
Moments like this make the threads of our life. Good and Bad. These types of horrific events you can always mark where you were and what you were doing. So, we can never forget. I was 16 when Charles Whitman killed and injured so many at UT of Texas. I grew up about 50 miles from there and had a friend injured on campus that day in that shooting. She wasn't injured by the shots, but the horrific memories. With friends, some time and the help of God she became whole again. May God bless all of those who were lost and all of those who survived.

What can be said of such a horrific event? I hate to think that we will now move on as if nothing happaned and that next week a new story will replace this one. We need to remember, we need to pray and hope that the friends and family of the victims can find strength in the coming days.

I am a college student here in Spokane, and I cannot fathom the grief and despair the families and friends and fellow students are going through. It's scary to think that this could happen on any campus in any city in any state. My hear goes out to those who have suffered a tragic loss. My heart also goes out the gunman's family and friend. They also are dealing with a terrible loss. I hope this is the last story we ever hear of like this. My heart simply aches for the victims, their families/friends and anyone else affected by this tragic event. Godspeed.

As an American currently living in Singapore where gun crime is next to zero, I have to ask "Why can't the USA impose stricter gun laws?" The U.S. imposes all kinds of laws (and enforces them) to protect it's citizens... speed limits, alcohol limits, seat belts, helmets to name just a few... but it can't impose stricter laws to control guns designed for killing people? Gun control works (at least better than NO gun control) all over the civilized world, so why can't the USA make it work?

my most heartfelt sympathies go out to all the families and friends of all the people who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy. as i watch the coverage, i can only hope my 16 year old daughter grows to be as strong willed as the students at vt, you all have shown great strength throught this horriffic time. i know at times like these we want to find someone to balme, i firmly believe the law officials and the university did all they could under the given situation. there is only one place to lay the blame, that is on the shooter himself.so please take the energy you would use to place blame, and use it to help the families and friends of all outstanding people who lost their lives and were wounded, to get past the grief they are facing. god bless all of you at virginia tech university.

THOUGHTS TO HELP COPE
I have a rather obsessive personality, and when things like 9/11, the wars, beheading, sinking of the Kursk, the tsunami and so on occurred -- I was drawn to the media to try and understand "why". The more I learned, the more depressed and unstable I became.
These are shocking events that we often are not equipped to process any time soon, and the tendency of news is to play our deepest and darkest fears.
So my advice is certainly to express, share and accept support in this time. But to limit the news you seek and accept; there is time to breath, rest and understand.

My thoughts and prayers go to everyone at VTech - remember to be strong - honor those we've lost and keep moving forward. Embrace those around you - live your life - If we don't - he wins - that would be what he wants - Don't let him win - He is nothing more than a coward - Let's keep our eye on the ball and focus on our future. God Bless America!!

somehow I doubt that this is any easier on the people reporting it than the people that it happened to. my prayers to everyone. no one, i think no one asks for such a thing to happen....

The people I feel sorry for are the family of all these kids,.. I really can't imagine what they are going through, but there is noone to blame but the guy who did this, things like this are going to happen every so often, and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing that can be done about it.. if it wasnt a school it woulda been a mall,or a church, or some other gathering of people. wrong place wrong time... everyone needs to let these people heal with their families and pick up the peices and move on.. things like this happen on a case by case basis.. just like the hijackers who took over the places on 9/11... we are a free nation, free to carry guns.. free to do basically whatever we want.. people die all over the country, every day.. its a part of life.. you can't sit around and worry about it.. people have to live their lives...

My prayers and thoughts are constantly with the families, friends and students at VT. If this is to be a defining moment in your life, let it be for good. Be stronger, more sympathetic and empathetic to others' pain, help each other, grow in compassion and understanding. Realize that life is short, and that we may not have tomorrow, even if we are young, beautiful and healthy. Hug your family and friends, don't wait to tell people you love and appreciate them. God bless you all.

Way to be a buzzkill, dude. People were trying to escape for a bit!

The media shouldn't capitalize or sensationalize with these "Rambo-style" tapes and photos that this deranged kid sent them. There is a chance that other deranged people might pick up on the attraction that this killer receives. Also I believe that showing these tapes places the killer in the forefront and hurts the victims, yet again. Sometimes money or ratings need to be less important than decency or morality.

I honestly cannot see why anyone, except people who work in a security related field, should ever have a need to own a handgun or conceiled weapon. A rifle or shotgun should be enough to protect one's home. Better yet, get a guard dog. And I cannot understand why a person needs to keep a handgun in a car. I have driven many years and never came across a situation where a gun was needed.
