An unnerving flyover

Posted: Tuesday, April 17 at 11:47 am ET by Bill Dedman, MSNBC.com

An Air Force fighter jet made several low-flying passes over the campus about 11:30 a.m., creating an awful din while tracing figure eights while flying as low as 1,000 feet.

The flyover, apparently a precursor to President Bush’s arrival, is the sort of thing guaranteed to unnerve people already rocked to their core by Monday’s tragedy.

Thoughts and best wishes to everyone touched by this great tragedy.

I wanted to note that it was reported yesterday that Pres. Bush wanted to attend the convocation but also made it clear that he did not want his presence to distract from the event (notice the leader of the free world was not given nor did he request a seat on stage). I have a feeling that the very same people complaining of him being there would be asking where he was if he did not make an appearance. You can't have it both ways.

This is extraordinary. I originally wondered if the venue could be off campus with video feed instead of dropping him onto campus. In this way, he could show support which I agree but not disrupt any further or burden any further a disrupted campus. The distinction I was making must be too subtle. There was a considerable middle ground for the president to attend but not disrupt the campus further. I suppose no one at the White House thought of it.

best regards to all posts, and your fervor. God Bless the campus including the sad misguided shooter. God is in all things.
