A forlorn formality

Posted: Wednesday, April 18 at 08:37 am ET by NBC News

In a forlorn formality that will be repeated often in the coming days, the medical examiner in Roanoke has released the bodies of two victims of the Virginia Tech shooting to their families.

Robert Parker, a spokesman with the Virginia Department of Health, tells NBC News that the first bodies were released Tuesday. He did not identify the victims.

Parker said the bodies of the 30 other victims of gunman Cho Seung-Hui will be released when positive identification is made and next-of-kin is notified.

University officials are expected to provide more information of the victims and the investigation at a 9 a.m. ET news conference at the university.

Attacking religion or those who believe in a religion and take comfort from it at this time is not appropriate1 The two comments from a Sean Torrington CT should not have been approved and should be removed immediately. We need to come together as a nation and as people and not be divided by an individual's opinion(s). Sincerely,
Norma Smith, Suisun City, CA

It is very easy to use a tragedy like this as leverage for bringing God and the Ten Commandments back into schools. To think that religion, Christian or otherwise, is the panacea to society's problems is naive at best, dangerous at worst. History is filled with religious atrocities. Do we forget?

My son, who graduated from VT in '94 now has little children of his own. It saddens and frightens me to know the tight reigns we now must hold on our children to attempt to keep them safe and out of harms way. I know my son loved being at VT and our hearts and prayers are with the VT families and all the students as they all go through the mourning process of their loss - a cruel and senseless loss of precious lives. May God give all of you the strength and courage to pick up the pieces and carry on - as best as one can.

This is a terrible and unforgettable tradgedy. As a mother myself, when I first saw the headlines I felt immediate anger and hostility and then came the sinking feeling of disbelief and grief. So many beautiful and young lives cut short by such horror and madness. I will pray for the parents, students, friends and faculty of these victims. Truly God has placed their souls as stars in the heavens. God Bless you all!

Everyone in Canada is thinking of you in this time of sadness . . . Our hearts go out to the families of the victims

I am so impressed with the students of VT. The interviews that I have heard and seen reveal thoughtful, articulate and empathetic individuals who are handling this horrific incident much better than the rabble rousing media. God bless the VT community.

I see no one discussing the flaws of the "Firearms Background Check" supposedly carried out for this maniac. Certainly, even a cursory background check would have brought to light his numerous contacts with the police (for stalking) and with the psychologists and university professionals that evaluated him. We demand Background checks on those tyring to purchase a firearm. But - WHAT KIND OF BACKGROUND CHECK IS THIS? It appears that the gunshop clerk is left to make the decisions... and this angers the hell out of me!

Thank you, Norma Smith for your response to the attackes on religion. Neither should this forum be used to express political opinions. Now is the time to put aside differences and come together in this common denominator - grief. I am very thankful that I can turn to..."the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles..." 2 Cor 1:3 I pray for God's comfort for the families of the victims. I pray that God will reveal His majesty and glory to you, Sean Torrington

May God Bless and watch over everyone of you at Virginia Tech and find some comfort in the arms of our God.

As a parent of a current student at Tech and a son that graduated from Tech, I have a very personal interest in the recent occurrences on campus. I cannot imagine the grief and sorrow that the parents of the killed and injured are experiencing. My heart goes out to each person that this tragedy has touched.

Now if the press will just report the news rather than trying to create negative news the healing process will be easier. I also wish that the politicians will stop trying to make their own political points on the backs of the victims…from ex-senator Allen pushing for more relaxed gun laws to religious groups using every opportunity to impose their opinions on others at the expense of the victims, students, VT officials and everyone touched by this horrible event.

One deranged person was responsible for this shooting, not the university president, not the campus police.

Our support should now turn to the students, faculty, police and staff at VT. Their character, spirit and sense of community have earned my utmost respect.

MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS VT AND THE WORLD ON A HOLD...WE MUST ALL MARCH FORWARD AND STAND BY THOSE WHO ARE IN SUCH DEEP SORROW AT THIS TIME..

As far as any religion goes. People need to stop making excuses for what has happened or the way people need to act. We live in the United States of America. Freedom. What ever that means. Fear is a reality that people choose to ignore. No one can say that guns are to blame. Should we shut down airlines because they are to blame for 9/11? Should we stop allowing vehicles on the roads (people make car bombs). You can always point the figure and blame something, but wake up. People are to blame. This killer has no excuse for what he did. No one deserves to die because of personal demons. This is a terrible thing that happened. The focus should be better security, period. We cannot control what people will do but we can try to protect ourselves better. Until then we should hope we're in the right place at the right time. I hope the effected families find strength in eachother. Remind themselves that what happened to their children was unexplainable. You cannot find a reason why someone would do this, so there is no reason to try. Love the one's you have and remember that love heals everything.

I greave for the victoms and their families whose lives have been shattered by the premeditated action of a disturbed individual. A possible fix so that this sinceless act will not be repeated would be to change the predator first bias in our justice system in such a manner that possible victums come first. The police and VT administration officials had ample time to take measures to prevent the VT tragedy if federal and state law did not prevent the campus or police athoraties from taking action to contain disturbed persons. As citizens we all can by virtue of the ballet box change our judicial system to better prevent these abhorrant events.

What a refreshing view point form Craig Scott that says to stop focusing on the killer in the media and focus on the victims, innocent bystanders in one mans hate. Our thoughts are with all of you today and in the days to come.
