Passing along names of the 'safe'

EVANS CREEK, La. –- While those who felt Katrina’s wrath have a lot to worry about, the first thing we hear most often from their mouths has to do with easing the concerns of others: “How can I let my friends and family know I’m alright?”

With communications, including cellular phone service, still virtually nonexistent in many areas hit by Katrina, evacuees and the people who weathered the initial onslaught but have been incommunicado ever since are desperately trying to reach out to let the world know they’re OK.

In an effort to get the word out, MSNBC.com is running lists of those known to be safe and the still missing. As we encounter people eager to communicate the most important news of all -– that they’re alive -– or looking for information on a missing friend or relative, we’ll also be adding to those lists.

If you're looking for someone, the link is: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9159961/

FEMA could be designated as the Federal Emergency Mismanagement Agency. It is unthinkable that a federal agency with the responsibilities of FEMA would even consider asking potential disaster relief claimants to call or access the agency's website. First of all most impacted persons have only limited access to telephone services, and even fewer would have access to a computer. FEMA should be out there making face-to-face contact with those affected to at least get the process moving forward. It seems reasonable to assume that FEMA, if the need arises, could verify property ownership at a later time by checking tax records, mortgage company records and to the extent practical, court house records. FEMA, like most government agencies and services, requires too much red tape, is a money pit and incapable to efficient operation.

I have been praying for my family in Pearl River, MS. Bill Jones and Barbara and Phil and Bo Jones and their wives and children too. If you know of the Jones family, please let them know their cousin David Gill is concerned. (334) 283-3433

Also, I have a lot of friends in Bogalusa, LA. How are our friends at Memorial Baptist Church? Praying for you all, David Gill and Family.

I am looking for Gunter Atkins, a Backyard Burgers restaurant owner in Biloxi and Gulfport. If anyone knows how to contact him please let me know. I would like to help if possible.

Communications: Why there hasn't been any? Well, it's that power of a storm that just blew through, ya think! I have been reading msnbc's safe list and lookin for list these past days. However, I am wondering, at these "safe havens" like the convention center, the Astrodome, San Antonio, Dallas, can't there be someone or a load of people to make a list of the survivors at each location? Then post that list on the msnbc's website? Is that a possiblity?
Then the other comment is on the safe list and looking for list, please put your phone # or a way to get in contact with you. Most of these survivors probably don't have the documentation that is much needed, especially the elderly. Please that is most helpful. Lastly, please pray! There are numerous of Americans that are lending a hand to help a survivor and their family. These Americans are giving them shelter, a House of Hope. Always, make sure that you have J.O.Y in your heart: Jesus, Others, then You. You give in the name of Jesus, You give Jesus's love to others in the name of Jesus, and then You love in the name of Jesus.

Yahoo missing person and survivor site -- CONSOLIDATED

http://news.yahoo.com/fc/us/hurricane_katrina_resources

(This site is being actively managed on-site at the Houston Astrodome. It contains links to multiple missing person sites and forums, including MSNBC.)

I am a volunteer at the Astrodome (but not with Yahoo). The residents there have access to computers to post themselves as a survivor, and volunteers are helping them do so. Likely will be the case at other large shelters as well. It takes a few days to get off the ground, though. Same goes for a list of residents.

I wonder if anyone has set up a website, where anyone can go to any computer to seek family, friends, pets, etc. You know, let's say your Joe Jones and you go to a website and key in who you are, where you are and who you're looking for and if they on the other end are doing the same and people could got to the website - they could locate each other. Just an idea. I would have no idea how to start something like that up, but feel free to use it if you're a webmaster reading this blog.

FEMA: We had the same problem in Pensacola after Hurricane Ivan. With only battery powered radio/TV we heard time and again "Call this number", "go online". Two weeks after contacting FEMA we had a field rep come to inspect our property who assured us we would get relief aid. Three weeks after that we received FEMA's decision by mail stating we did not have enough damage to qualify for aid. I highly doubt this will be the case in Mississippi and Louisana but folks in those areas get ready for what might be long process to receive necessary funds from FEMA

Good day. I've attempted working through the local Red Cross, but wanted to assist in the following way. As my wife is Chinese, and from years of visiting New Orleans, I know that there existed a sizeable Chinese community, we will gladly house a Chinese family with children, in this way communications and cultural problems can also be alleviated.

Please help us locate and evacuate Alx Fermanis. She was last heard from in New Orleans on Saturday 09/03/05 and we have the means to get her to family in Washington State. Please call 360-471-6348, 360-981-6877 or 360-297-5749.

Volunteers (not the Red Cross) at the Astrodome have been working endlessly over the weekend to add the names of evacuees and help them search for relatives using msnbc. You can also check www.familymessages.org ... many names have been added there as well. Good luck.

Please help me I'm looking for Steve Hayes and family from Ocean Springs Mississippi. If you know he and family are ok please let me know.

New Orleans has been the focus of attention even before the levees broke...i feel so betrayed by the news media...i have family in all parts of MS, and they only show an occasional picture of Biloxi...i have no idea what is going on...but i looked up some aerial views so i could try and find my family....here is the address...then you can click on
a block that is where you may want to look....hope this helps anyone looking for a structure in MS...but most is just completely gone...i can hardly fine any landmarks...click on the map in the area you want to look at...if you click on the city...it will download a huge zip file of all the pictures...

http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/katrina/

once the picture downloads it will have a button on it to enalrge the pictures...i did find my uncles home...because it was beside a water tower that was still standing...

Please help, I am looking for William M. York of Westwego, LA. I received a call from his mom, very worried about him please contact me, his cousin.

Looking for Zeb Mayhew, NOLA and Oak Alley, Vacherie LA. Is he ok. Did Oak Alley survive.

Many people looking for loved ones and friends don't seem to know where to start looking for the misplaced. Here are a couple of sites I have come across www.familymessages.org http://news.yaholl.com/fc/us/hurrican_katrina_resources & www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9159961/. I hope this helps someone. My prayers and thoughts go out to the entire country because there is no one not touched in some way by this tragedy.

I live in a little town outside Garden City, Ks. where I here we are about to house 250 of the hurricane victims. If there is anyway I can help anyone findout if there loved one is amongst them, please let me know. I would gladley look and get the word out as soon as they arrive. God bless to you all and I am praying daily for you.
