HOPE, FEAR IN HATTIESBURG

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Amid the misery and destruction are moments of renewal and hope in the Katrina-ravaged communities up-country from Mississippi's Gulf Coast. For others, plenty of fear and uncertainty remains.

Reunion

Here, Marilyn Assavedo (right) shares a tearful reunion with her mother Janet Kaufman at the Red Cross shelter in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday. Kaufman's husband stayed at their home in Braithwaite, La., but it’s unclear whether she'll be able to rejoin him there.

And here, Natasha Thomas-Vincent holds her infant son Shaun at the Red Cross shelter in Hattiesburg, Miss Saturday afternoon.  The Vincents, who lived one block from one of the now-breached levies in New Orleans, fled last Sunday. Natasha and her elderly mother were separated in the confusion, and have not yet been in contact.
