Uniform crimes
In Baghdad on Tuesday a group of men dressed in Iraqi police uniforms stormed a bank and left with over $700,000. Last week, men dressed in Iraqi military uniforms stopped a vehicle headed to the central bank and stole a million dollars in cash.
When I heard both stories, I have to admit, I was not surprised. To be honest, I actually thought, at least this was just theft and not another mass kidnapping.
If this incident happened in a "normal" place, I would have been more interested and the press would have been all over it. There would have been reporters, camera crews, satellite trucks and more importantly police lines securing the area. But not here.
Personally, I think the most interesting aspect here is whether the thieves were actual thieves in uniform or real security forces committing crimes and disgracing the uniform. In any case, it is another example of the lawlessness that this country has plunged to after the start of the war and the "end of all major" operations.
Confusion creates fear
Iraqis tell me that when they see a police checkpoint they get terrified; they do not know if it is a real police checkpoint or a fake one manned by men posing as police.
If it is a fake one, well, they are in trouble because there is a big chance they might be kidnapped. But also, if they establish that it is a "real" checkpoint, they have to worry whether or not those police men are part of a death squad.
I have been on patrols with Iraqi police before - they don’t have armored cars and not all of them have body armor. But despite being targeted everyday and having their academies blown up by suicide bombers, they still do their job, because they are true Iraqis who love their country.
It is a shame how some bad policemen are affecting the reputation and the honor of the entire police force, but it is a bigger shame how some politicians are using the police force for personal gains.

We have bad policemen in the USA as well. In both Iraq and the USA, the bad policemen are protected by their 'less bad' bretheren.
This news is saddening...and predicted. I hope the Iraqis can get their state together.

All this talk about the mess the US has created in Iraq! Has everyone forgotten about Afghanistan? Again, the US did not plan for the peace, and now the Taliban is coming back and the US-backed warlords are producing record amounts of heroin. How many Amercian families have been destroyed because of drugs coming from this part of the world.
So far the Bush administration has fought two wars and lost both. Why do you all keep voting for him and the Republican party?

Sad to say it is a sign of the times, bad people, taking advantage of a bad situation to benifit themselves.

Amazing how quiet the Kurds have been during this whole process. They have set up their own government, police, army etc. In stark contrast is Baghdad, which although seems to be progressing from the soldiers stories, the media continues the drumbeat of chaos and mayhem. Is there that much difference in the types of public servants/policmen in one location over the other??? Somehow it doesn't seem logical, I am questioning everything, and everyone!

I think alot has been said about how bad the wars are in Iraq, and Afganistan, death tolls and familys loses ,kids lifes and men alike are gone in a flash, these warriors are heros, but one thing you don't here is how many bad guys and terrorist they have taken out of play, they are coming to the firing line.better to kill them there, than them us here ,God bless our soldiers, I thank them, keep up the good fight !

When a criminal orginazation expands into a new territory, their first goal is to organize local criminals to aid them. This has been the main goal of the Bush adminstration from day one. The only problem with their mission, was selecting the strongest group of criminals to ally themselves with. This is where they misjudged the Iraqie people, thus creating the non-acceptance of the criminals selected to dictate them. Unlike the US, where, the religious cult is easily manipulated into blind obediance of any leader who thumps a bible in favor of the expansion of christianity. Bush should be rembered by history as the best organizer of the religious cultists, to defile the name of God and the teachings of the Bible.

My son a Sgt Ist Class in nthe US Army has just competed a yr in Bagdad, area. He lost 6 men of 80 and 12 wounded. The sectarian is increasing daily. He does not see us winning, but that the Iraq gov must solve this centuries old problem. If the president spent a week on the front lines his perspective of the war would change!!!

Greg, the kurds are patiently waiting for the inevitable failure of a false nation that never existed until it was created out of thin air by the western allies after WWI. At that point they will declare an independant Kurdistan that they have been quietly putting in place while chaos reigns in the south. Hopefully we will support them. They are the only people in "Iraq" that really welcome us and treat our troops well. Partition of "Iraq is a good idea. It can help break up the shia (sp) cresent that our bungling is helping to create.

Gary,
I wonder what the Turks and Iranians would think of an independant Kurdistan? This is going to be another major issue in the not-too-distant future

So what good are we doing there? Until the Iraqi government and the Iraqi PEOPLE decide they have had enough killing and are willing to work together, we are wasting our money, the precious lives and limbs of our military for people who would rather kill than live. It is time for the Iraqis to make THEIR decision and time for us to see some results of that decision. If they are not willing to negotiate and reach some sort of peace and unity among their own crazy religious beliefs - then we need to get out and stop dying for them. It IS civil war no matter what they call it. It IS a religious war no matter what they call it. Maybe somebody could blast the part of their Islam that does not support killing and treachery on speakers 24/7 throughout Iraq and who knows, maybe some of them would actually listen - if INDEED that is what Islam says? It is all about power, control and greed - and nothing we can do is going to change that. Why do we continue to fight and die for a people who are not willing to even ATTEMPT to get along and have peace amongst themselves? Lay it on the line and tell them to show us something or get the hell out of there and let them keep killing until there is nobody left to kill. Then the Kurds can take it all and maybe live in peace - they seem to be civilized and have figured out the stupidity of blowing up your own nation and your own people. We have sacrificed way too much already for people who want to fight and kill and refuse to find compromise. Our "cowboy" president has made his mark in history alright. He will be remembered long after he is dead and buried by our children and grandchildren, great grandchildren and generations to come as THEY are still paying the price of his ignorance and lust for fame. On another note, homeland security is now axing the exit check on people leaving the US. We should ALL contact our representatives and let them know this is NOT acceptable. This is one of the vital security measures recommended by the 911 commission. If we don't know who leaves and when, we have no way of knowing who is coming and going. A few bridges to nowhere, stupid grants the feds are always giving, and a little oversight on the wasted money given to Halliburton, etc. would fund this segment of homeland security. Speak out people - we are not safe unless we know who leaves and when ---
