Reporting under al-Qaida control

I am often asked, “How do you get the video you broadcast or post on the Internet?” On days like today, I find myself asking the same question.

Today one of our freelance Iraqi cameramen - to describe him as brave is a wild understatement – brought in a video and the amazing story of how he filmed it.

Place: The city of Baqouba

Date: Christmas Day

Time: 4 p.m.

Scene: The stringer reports that large parts of the city of Baqouba have “fallen” under the control of al-Qaida-inspired Sunni militants.  They attack American troops, Iraqi security forces and force Shiites from their homes. Many parents have stopped sending their children to school. Few state institutions function. The city is paralyzed.

Our cameraman (for his safety, I am not including his name) was driving from Baqouba to our Baghdad bureau. He was in a car with his father and brother. Along the road, they passed several cars and pickups, packed with gunmen, waving AK-47s and black flags. The gunmen were members of Al-Qaida in Iraq, holding a “parade” to show their power, and intimidate the local population and Iraqi security forces. From the back of his car, our cameraman - without telling his brother or father in the front - took out his small DV camera and filmed the gunmen in stealth.

But he didn’t get away with it.

A mile down the road, gunmen stopped the car.

“Get out of the car,” they yelled, guns raised at the window.

“Give me your camera and tape.”

“What are you talking about?” the cameraman’s father asked.

“Give me the camera!” insisted one of the gunmen, wearing in a black ski mask, baggy pants and striped button-down shirt.

Our cameraman handed it over.

But it didn’t end there.

The gunmen then kidnapped the cameraman, his brother and father, blindfolding them, fettering their hands behind their backs, and stuffing each one into the trunk of a car.

“When they took off the blindfold, I though for sure I was going to die,” the cameraman told me.

“I was sitting in front of leaders, all of them wearing masks. One leader asked me, ‘Who are you and where do you work?’

“I told him I am a freelance journalist and that I film and then try to sell the tapes in Baghdad. If I had said I worked with NBC News or any American network I would have been killed on the spot, I think.

“They asked me, ‘Are you a Sunni or a Shiite?’

“I told them I am a Sunni.

“Eventually, they agreed to let me go, and told me I should come with them and film the rest of their parade.

“They took me in one of their cars, and drove me around the areas of Baqouba under their control. There were no police on the streets. They had just killed a policeman. His body was still in the car where they shot him.

“There are no more journalists working in Baqouba,” he told me.

I can understand why.

In response to the story above - WHO CARES!!??
The journalists "embedded" with our troops are the type of people who would chop off their own foot just so they could make a story out of it.

How many U.S. troops die every day? Of those deaths, how many individual stories of those troops are posted on a news website or reported on the national news? Almost none. Now consider this - whenever a journalist is kidnapped or taken hostage, how many times do you hear about their story online or on the nightly news? Almost all the time.

Put the stories of the troops first, they are the ones who actually have work to do over there.

Oh yeah, to the man who started filming the parade: you got what you deserved, I don't feel sorry for you.

7 lac people dead 1 million handicapped 1.5 million families affected . who's responsible ? sitiution aggravating . who should be tried for war crimes saddam or bush ? who is creating division for mankind . the greatest democracy of the world . we expect better from you . we are creating hatred instead of love . one religion we belong humanity.

about a year ago I decided to do as much reading as possible to understand the Middle East. I encourage you all to educate yourselves and you will understand these people and how this war and intolerance has been going on thousands and thousands of years ago. There is nothing we can do, nor should we as Americans do. The Sunni and Shites are so dedicated to their beliefs the presence of military will never change this. READ READ READ Educate yourselves it is very interesting

I say bomb, bomb and bomb. Innocents are killed anyway, so why worry about them now..If you are that
stupid to stay in such a stupid country or follow such an absurd religion, then you deserve to die! Kill them all and shut up all ready!

This is not the real Saddam, He has a look alike cousin. Check pictures of the real Saddam and compare these two guys.

I wish that our current administration payed attention to the painful lessons of our country's past. I believe that we have created a crisis in Iraq that now needs further attention. Before U.S. forces invaded Iraq, to the dismay of our President there was no Al-Quada presence. As a result of our uniformed and haste decision to attack Iraq, we have opened the doors for all terrorists and must now stay indefinitely to try to ensure that a more radical and dangerous government is not formed. Unfortunately, our President refuses to acknowledge his contrived invasion and is only adding fuel to the mideast fire and continues to put more Americans' lives in danger both abroad and at home. Simultaneously, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are losing their lives and are living in terror while the President does not lose a second of sleep and is in optimal health!!!

We have no business in Iraq, that's a fact. But I still laugh at the cowards behind the black masks. If they are really proud of their country and who they are and what they stand for, they would show their faces.

We need to get out of Iraq, now, and let the nation of cowards fend for themselves.

you can still download these kind of videos from the internet, they film there own tapes, better than risking a camerman even if he is local.

I really would like to know what the cowards hiding behind masks are saying, and to JUlian from Argentina wake up and look at the corruption in your own back yard.
And to merlo who did Saddam kill?

I am so absolutely disgusted by all this finger pointing at Americans being the Bad guy...need you forget Saddam was an absolute Madman, torturing, killing, gassing and INVADING other countries. Truth is, as an AMERICAN, I really could care less what any other nation on Earth thinks of us or our government. In fact most should remember, that when things go wrong, who do you come crying to. WMDs or not...He (saddam) needed to go. Sad thing is, we didn't just desimate the entire country....I personally think we went a little easy in Iraq....but what you outsiders and Tree Hugging Liberals need to know is that our leaders have allot more info than what you are getting. Iraq was the right thing to do. Iran should be next along with North Korea, Yemen, Syria and a few others. And if you are an American that foolishly tied our Armed Forces hands behind their backs by voting in these squeemish COMMY Dems, maybe you should take your diplomocy ideas over to the Middle East and FAIL the way it has ever time you Liberals hold any office. I say get out....Gearge Bush is a HERO and a GREAT LEADER. Period.... Every Nation on Earth needs to remember it! When Islam comes kickin in your door to slice your Infidel head off, or rape your daughter or kill your family...don't cry to us for help....You are on your own.
Dig in...this fight is never gonna end until Islam is gone...it is worse than the Nazis.
Me....A TRUE AMERICAN...Semper Fi...we're still with you Bush...atleast some of us...Don't apologize...maintain your Honor...these 5th graders just don't see the Big picture

Some people forget, that it took the congress and the senate to help send our troops to Iraq- there was plenty of time for debate and discussion and prayer before our troops were sent- how could there be so much support prior to the war and now less than 30% of us approve?! What is wrong with you people?! Don't tell me you thought it would be such a 'cake walk'?

I happened to look at the Photos of the past year and found the photo for the Security sweep in Iraq brought back some memories of my past. I have been asked as a Viet Nam Veit what my thought are on Iraq. Imagine if the soldier in the photo were another nationality operating in the USA and the persons on the floor were your family. Would you want the troops going through your home looking for Democrats or Republicans to free one group from the other or would you rather they not be there. The Security sweeps help protect our troops then and now but would we allow this in America. I would certainly fight for this not to happen here but it would have to be in America not in someone else's backyard.

Mr.Engel Considering all violence that you and others in your field have to report on in Iraq etc. please be safe!

We are in Iraq because of our politicians. Now the same people are trying to run the war? Let the military fight and finish the mess that the politicians created and seriously revisit the whole structure of our democracy. 30 people change in Washington does not change anything. Every body in our society is held accountable for theirs actions and so should be the politicians!

HMMM..Fellas Ive seen street thugs more organized than this group of banditts..Please stay a little longer now you just made that slum area a new target for American bombers.Did that guy notice his plate on the car said dead man walking..

Honestly.. Iraq is what the wild west used to be in america. There needs to be law and order but it will take time to establish! And for that to happen someone must get ahold on the religous aspects in that region and put the FEAR OF GOD in them! Maybe the only way is to level a city.. say a NUKE??? yup im talkin NUKE THE BASTAGES!!! (bastage = Bastard + savage) I know it sounds extreeme.. but FEAR is the only thing they TRUELY understand and its time we use that!! lets settle the lawlessness once and FOR ALL!!!

Insanity filmed won't make it any less insane, or bring an answer for what is done. Watching this only serves to remind me I will take the side of humanity, anywhere at anytime. God is great?? Or, I love peace so much I'm going to kill you? It is more like, what I believe gives me the right to kill you! Crazy is still crazy in my book. Sanity is a choice, no matter where you look at it.

We have been Redcoats fighting the Minuteman's war ever since we took a detour to a dead end street in Baghdad. We should have "stayed the course" in Afghanistan. Now we have former members of the Iraqi Republican Guard being called insurgents instead of patriots trying to expel invaders and Al-Qaeda now has a foothold somewhere they couldn't have been previously. Saddam was a bad guy but he held Iraq together. The real reason we are still there now is we are afraid our bungling has given Al-qaeda the opportunity to tap the oil and finance even more international terrorism. However, we can't control Baghdad much less the rest of Iraq. Journalists such as this man let the world know what the reactionary Republican pols in Washington don't want you see and nearly lost his life to do it. His initial stealth approach implied he knew what the penalty might be if discovered and makes him every bit the hero as any soldier wearing combat medals.

I think that we should take Saddam out of jail and put Saddam back in as president of Iraq. As far as I can tell, We had no business invading Iraq in the first place. Has it really served any useful purpose in so many of our soldiers getting killed in Iraq?

As one blogger suggested....DO EDUCATE yourself by reading about the history of this area but more importantly about the Islamic religion and why you as a non-muslim should see what the real threat to our American way of living much less any 'democracy' in the world wil be threatened by Islam.
Read for starters: The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades by Robert Spence.
Again we go ionto a country under the apsice of 'war' and we do it with all these 'constraints' when it should be go in with overwhelming power/force which is what these people CAN relate to ...it's their culture....as opposed to us performing ANOTHER 'police' action in a country that does not really want us there anyway. Either do the job right or get out and be very prepared that once we leave that country/area....it will not end there....they will simply follow us and will do their 'Jihad' anyway shape or form to decimate 'us'...anyone in an un-Islamic country/state.
This is their mantra....period....and their 'calling/duty' by their own prophet...Muhaamed.
Just read about it...

what is wrong with you? NUKE THEM? you un-educated "BASTAGE" these are PEOPLE you are talking about. HUMAN BEINGS. can you not see that? there are innocent people living amongst the perpertrators. Women and Children.... Mike from chicago, why dont you go and teach them this "lesson" instead of sitting behind your computer throwing insults.coward. And to the woman who said islam will come knocking at your door to rape your women. GET EDUCATED YOU FOOL. True muslims do not believe in rape, or the slaughtering of innocent people. Islam is about fairness, and equality. Before you talk READ READ READ. then let me know what you think about islam "raping your women"? What a joke. No wonder the world is in such a sorry state. there are people like you living and existing in such a state of hatred, ignorance and hypocracy.

Wow, reading these comments, I truly understand how ignorant half of us Americans are. I am American and I am Muslim, I was born in the US and love this country, I like Football and was even Homecoming King of my HS. So as a Muslim, I have to tell you, that we beleive and want in peace just like the young men in the video, but how would you react if your city was turned into a war zone, electricity cut, family dead, homes burnt down, etc? If you had to bury your child, would u be sane and wave hands to the foreign troops? "Shock and Awe" was a term we used when we bombed Iraq, we hit military bases, but also hit schools, mosques, librarys, hospitals...but when we arrived on the ground, we secured the oil fields first. Its an ugly and fragile situation and hopefully, we as peace seeking Americans can only make ammends, and look at establishing peace and then try something new, talking...Iran has offered but GW turned it down..go figure...

This video shows how volitile the situation in Iraq is. I still believe that we have a duty now that we are there to help the Iraqi people defend their new freedom. If we back away and leave, it will just cause the Iraqi people to dispise us and create hate.

It's time for change for certain. I agree to put more troops on the ground and take these thugs out! I would have loved to have seen there reaction if an A-10 suddenly appeared on the horizon. This is a war that will go on after we have left Iraq. However it is very important that we make a statement there. America has never taken land in a war abroad and there is no intent to do so here. We must keep taking the fight to these extremist until the corner is turned. Otherwise they will be standing on your corner! They want to destroy the USA, Britain, Isriel. I am not a Republican, I am not a Democrat, I am not a African American, or European American, I am jus an American and damned proud of it. I support our troops and the judgement of our leaders. They are human, they make mistakes. When you fall off a horse you don't stop riding. When things don't go as you thought. You don't stop pursuing you goals. God Bless the USA. I am a veteran of our armed forces.

plz people try to undrstand we were attacked. We have destroyed countless training camps, frozen funds, and killed thousands of terrorists. This is our mission.I recently enlisted in the combat infantry and i wanna say i am glad i did. Also plz remember this is not the first time we have been attacked.Believe me when i say i have sat and tried to find a reason to disagree with this war,but i cant.I agree. We seem to be forgeting why we fight.I hope as a people we can open our eyes and do whatever it takes to secure victory in iraq and promote a peaceful world.Do you want to have to fight these terrorists in our streets?or worry about an ied on the side of our roads?.There is also north korea and iran.Keep in mind these regimes will have to be delt with in time.

This whole thing will get worse before it gets better. We have done this before in ww2 and were victorious and secured peace and stability and we will again.

I am an american soldier.I will die for this country, and for all who want to be free.
