Saddam verdict lacks details

The final court session and verdict today were fast, direct and clear, but not clear at all.

In less than 10 minutes, Saddam Hussein was told he was guilty of crimes against humanity, but never exactly how or why.

Was it the witness testimony that proved Saddam's guilt?

Was it Saddam’s own acceptance in court of overall responsibility for the draconian punishment his regime carried out of the villagers of Dujail after a 1982 assassination attempt in the town?  Was it documents the prosecution said Saddam signed ordering the deaths of Dujail residents that ultimately swayed the judges?  We still do not know.

The full verdict, a document of several hundred pages, explaining how and why today’s judgment was reached was not released.  U.S. officials said it should be ready by Thursday.  So why issue the verdict today?  U.S. court advisors told reporters today it was delayed mainly for technical reasons.  All insist the verdict was not politically timed and that it was an Iraqi decision; there is no reason to doubt their word.

The furthest the chief judge went today to explain why Saddam was sentenced to death was to say Saddam was found guilty of Article 12 A, through Article 15 B, of the Iraqi High Criminal Court Law (the tribunal trying Saddam's constitution).  All that means, examining at the law, is that Saddam was guilty of "willful murder" because he had  "ordered, solicited or induced the commission of such a crime, which in fact occurs or is attempted." Saddam Hussein was found guilty of ordering murders.  Who he murdered, how, when and what proved his guilt, we are told, will be explained on Thursday.

It was not sufficient for the International Center for Transitional Justice, an NGO that has been monitoring the trial since the beginning.  In a statement tonight the group said, "Today's verdicts were delivered in a 40-minute session that gave little indication of the judgment's detail and reasoning."

On the “Today” Show this morning Michael Scharf, one of the leading experts on the Saddam trial, said the Dujail case was easy to prove and that his guilt was clear.  I believe Scharf is correct.  There was an assassination attempt on Saddam in 1982 and the Iraqi dictator oversaw a massive revenge campaign, even awarding medals to some of his henchmen for punishing his enemies and their families and neighbors.  But the lack of clarity today adds fuels to critics who say Saddam's trial was politically motivated and that the verdict was rushed to meet American political deadlines -- the very accusation Saddam Hussein's lawyer made today.

Saddam was almost certainly guilty, but why? It's still unclear.

If Bush went into Iraq to get Saddam, and find WMD's, why did't we leave when both were accomplished? Those people have been trying to kill each other for hundreds of years what makes Bush think he or anyone else can change that. Our men and women are being needlessly slaughtered trying to feed the egos of Blush, Cheney and Rumsfield. When (if ever) the US gets out of Iraq they will go right back to the way they were before.

To the one who commented on Bush's grandfather - get a life - I don't blame you for what your grandfather did either.

You are all free to think what you want, but if you truly think the Hitler of today is Bush instead of Saddam then you are not thinking at all - you are instead allowing rhetoric and ignorance of the issues to cloud your mind.

And for God's sakes - STOP saying ANYONE lied about WMD - Even Clinton thought there was WMD, and we DID find some - just not enough to make you happy. Don't worry - someday it will be discovered under all that sand. Too bad you still won't be man enough to admit you were wrong.

Stop questioning peoples patriotism for 2 seconds and ask yourself:

Why have a sentencing trial when the verdict isnt done?

Your gut knows this was all political even if your head begs for the contrary.

If you are ashamed to be an American, get out of the country!!!

BUSH AND CHENEY TALK ABOUT DEMOCRATS CUT AND RUNNING,EXCUSE ME BUT ISN`T THAT WHAT THEY DID SO THEY WOULDN`T HAVE TO GO TO VIET_NAM?IRAQ WAS INVADED ILLEGALLY FOR OIL AND CHALIBI TO BECOME PRESIDENT!GEORGIE YOU CAN NOT HIDE FROM THE TRUTH!

And, for the person above stating that Bush's Grandpa was a Nazi supporter......that is irrelevant, if even true. Most every person in this world has ancestral ties to things we don't believe in ourselves....skeletons in the family closet.
I believe we (the greatest superpower in the world), did the right thing in FINALLY taking a stand against Hussein (WMD or no WMD) because people like him ARE a threat to the world, not just neighboring countries. And the one thing that 9/11 SHOULD have showed us is that even 1/2 a world away there are people that want to destroy us, and will, if we allow them the opportunity!! Hussein thumbed his nose at the UN for over 15 years, and had the same dreams as Hitler....power, fortune and taking lives of the "infidels".
Freedom is NOT free, people, because there is always someone trying to take it from you, and Hussein was a threat to everyone except those that obeyed him.
Just think, if you people bashing the U.S lived in Iraq and said those things about their government, Hussein would have tortured and executed you....yet, you want to defend him??? WOW!!!!

AMEN Michael from Mosinee!! It just never ceases to amaze me at how dense half of our country can be at times. If you listen to them you would think that getting up and going to work in the morning was all a part of some national conspiracy to sway vote, and avenge a vendetta. Give me a break people and use your heads. I suppose you are the same diluted individuals that think that our own country planned 9-11 for politcal reasons. When you finally take the time to really use your brain and think about what this country stands for, and as a powerful nation what our obligations are to other countries in this world, you might just realize what was done had to be done. I am so tired of the negative attitudes and US bashing .... and the sad thing is most of your opinions are borrowed and not thought up on your own. You listen to someone on TV voice their opinion and adopt it as your own, following it blindly like lost sheep in a field. I suppose those of you that walk around this way are the same ones that have had prayer removed from our schools and then wonder why we have kids coming in with guns shooting the place up. Get an education, get a clue, and start being productive members to this society!

Bottom Line: My ballot is in the mail. I realize I am just a Joe Sixpak - worked 55 years for a couple good Employers - Hundreds Not Good - Crooks - Tax Cheats - Double Accounting Methods - Hidden Subsideraries - Underhanded Contracts - Kick Backs - Buddy Buddy with City Council Members - Jobs for them at end of terms and the Hole Ball of Wax. So - at the end of the trail - 77yrs Old Old Old - Back worn out - I sent in my vote; a Patriot who never filtched a cent or penney from anyone - ready for my military burial - maybe I will be refused; I would not be surprised! So! here is my offering for print; which will never be printed - Censorship - Freedom of the Press is for Newspaper Owners and Editors - Usually I am told my articles are not of General Interest. Ha Ha Saddam and Sammy for President - The American people have not had one for a long time. Go with God - If He wants You - I think Not!

This is the most important election ever,we have to elect people to Congress that will have oversight of the Executive Branch. So we the Tax Payers wiil be assured they wo!nt start wars on rumers and lies.

I wonder if these whinning cry-baby liberal idiots who vote for democrats would offer up any excuses had they lived during the Vietnam War when 58,000 lost their lives under the Democrats. Go figure...

Why are u even, even arguing if Saddam is guilty? Did you think the Iraqui judge or the jury were impartial? Come on, the whole Iraqui judicial system is sponsored, supervised and organized by the Bush administration. Its ridiculous to think, that it will be a fair trial. Sadamm didnt bomb the WTC, please U.S. stop trying to be the World's super police. Money, oil, its all about it.

I wish I were naive enough to believe we invaded Iraq for strictly humanitarian reasons. Maybe if Darfur sat atop a huge oil reservoir, we could show how caring we are there, too!
It's funny that the 'leaders' who send us off to fight have not done their fair share. 'AWOL' Bush, for example.

I'm not ashamed to be an American. I am ashamed that America would, like the Germans in '36, allow themselves to be manipulated by a facist machine intent on exacting revenge for some perceived injustice. For the Nazis, it was Versailles. For GWB, it was Hussein sitting in power in a sovereign nation.

No. I'm not ashamed to be an American. I'm grateful to be able to vote tomorrow, to make my voice heard by voting for people like Francine Busby who recognize that war in Iraq is not good for American security.

To Carol Adams, how is this a step in healing for 9/11? The person who planned it is still in jail and hasnt been prosecuted. The head of that organization is still on the run and troops were diverted from Afganistan to Iraq for non-existent WMD's. All goverment reports and the administration have agreed that SH had nothing to do with 9/11. But it is niave sheep like you who parrot the non-existent connection because you lack the mental capacity to think for yourself and ask questions when the answers dont make sense. This country was founded on the idea that we can question our government because the goverment answers to us, The People. If you like to blindly follow a government then people like you should just leave the US go live in a dictatorship that loves your blind allegiance.

I agree that Saddam was a dictator but to let it cloud a person's judgement on an important election shows how easily some people can be lead in believing anything they're told - especially by the ones that lied to them in the first place. Saddam was judged "guilty" from day one by a court that sprung up and I doubt has any serious experience in law. I agree with one reader that the trial should have been held at the Hague. Soldiers from all countries are dying in a war feed by politically motivated greed. Saddam was found guilty by a Shite controlled government lead by a radical Shite religious leader. Last but not least, where is all that missing money that cannot be found or traced (billions)?. That sure would have helped the homeless here and the welfare of families that could not afford hospital insurance that could have possible saved someone. Not to mention sll the millions of American dollars our troops found. Where did that money go?? Could have bought the much needed armor and helmets needed by our troops. Patriotic thinking is good for it remembers those that fought and died in wars to keep us free. Just don't let it cloud your thinking. By the way I'm a retired Vet (1958-1979) and lost a lot of friends in wars and strifes. Wars are where the brave keep dying for a cause and the rich keep getting richer from that cause.

How can anyone suggest that Saddam is not guilty or that his trial and subsequent sentence were somehow politically motivated. Think back to 9-11 and how a country decided to act against terrorist such as Sadam and Ben Laden. How easily we forget.

It's a shame that so many americans make their decisions based only on their religious or patriotic beliefs without really investigating on their own. I guess it takes too much effort to question the party propaganda and see what is really happening in the world.
As for "America, love it or leave it", we heard plenty of that while we were bogged down in Vietnam and it is just as stupid today as it was then. America, love it and stay here to get rid of the brainwashed fascists who want so badly to take over our country and tell everyone else how they have to live and what they must believe in. A vote for a republican is a vote for fear, hatred, racism, and hypocrisy.

Just a word of caution. It is not uncommon for full judgements at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia to be released days after an actual judgement is given in court.

The irony here is the crimes Saddam was found guilty of were committed when he was a friend and ally of the U.S. and Donald Rumsfeld. (Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East (1983 - 1984).

With the conviction and ultimate execution of Saddam Hussein is set a new president for the culpability of any countries leader for military crimes committed under their authority and direction.

I served and I know for a fact this goverment we have now has manipulated what ever they could to completely control the country. That in itsself will be their downfall. You can only force your agenda on people so much before they decide enough is enough!! That time starts tomorrow when millions of americans go out and tell our government its time for a change and its time to start thinking about whats right for all people not just whats right for one point of view.

Get out there and vote guys lets change this thing tomorrow and every election after that. Its time to take the country back for the good of the people as a whole.

"there is no reason to doubt their word."

No reason?

None?

I disagree, sycophant.

He did crimes against humanity for years, and the governments of the world did nothing. Nor the U.N. Why wait so long, and sit back and watch for years the crimes going on? I think the governments and the U.N. are just as guilty for allowing it to continue for so long. They too should be on trail for they never tried to stop it, or arrest him then. What no POWER, MONEY or POLITICAL GAIN back then? Give us back the America that was the dreams of our forfathers and give us honest caring governments that care for the people and the world. and not the ones for the gain of power and wealth.

Yes, now that we have (US) have senteced Saddam to hang, now how about the punishment for the US people who made him dictator. Lets see was Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, or any other President. It would seem that they ann any other self seeking political official should be punished also

All I Can Says Is What Goes Around Comes Around..I Think Hanging Is Too Easy For Such An Evil Murdering Dictator

As i read these comments. I realize these peole cannot be Americans. Or even understand what it means to be in our wonderful country. THANK YOU President Bush. These none Americans Who think all there is in life is Democrats and Republicains NOT MEN and WOMEN. And Trash who ever is in office so the world can think our country is hidous. And we do not stand behind what we believe. President Bush did the right thing. HE let's remember only finished up what had already been going on for years. And believe me you are giving him way to much credit. He did not make these decissions alone. And had Saddam stayed in power the USA would have suffered even more. OPEN YOUR EYE'S instead of your mouths. Lets not even think about the poor Iraq people. Let's also not forget Clinton dropped the ball. Not because he was a Democrate. Because he was not a very good man of Morale's and religion. He was leading our country and making us a joke all around the world. They laughed at us. President Clinton let Osama Go..My husband and Son are in the Air Force and yes they both have fought in this War. They both signed up knowing they could go to war and DIE... That is what the military is about. All who have died made that decission when they joined. President Bush did not make them. I am proud of President Bush for not putting his tail between his legs and running when the going got tough. I am proud that he is still standing behind our country and our Military and showing the world what we are made of. And to those who believe the military men lost money in there pay checks when they return from Iraq... Thats a lie. I know i recieve one twice a month. They lose there combat pay once they are safe in the USA because they are no longer on the battle gound. To us in the military we understand this.
