Day that came too soon

I wondered last night what we would wake up to this morning, or if we would wake up at all.

We had been told to expect the worst. Certainly all indicators pointed to a very violent day here during which Americans would be targeted on this somber anniversary.

There was one bomb blast that rattled the windows this morning, but that is part of a typical day. American and Iraq security forces found two thousand pounds of explosives in a location less than a half mile from us; a very good thing.

Five years after 9/11, I am in Baghdad, and five years ago, as I watched the attacks at home in Atlanta, I had no idea that I would be here, now, and worrying about what this morning would bring.

Ringing the alarm bell
In early September, 2001, I had just returned from the Middle East. I was working on a documentary called "One Day Soon." The premise - terrorists were planning a mass casualty event against the United States. The documentary was due to air in October 2001 on another network.

"One Day Soon" was not aired soon enough. That is why I cannot watch the 9/11 commemorations. I feel that, as a journalist, I did not do enough, and report quickly enough so that alarm bells would be rung. Sincerely, I feel a sense of guilt and I weep on this day.

That is why I am in Baghdad. After a quarter century of covering pretty much every conflict on earth, friends and family ask me why I am here. They argue that I am too old to be doing this. I am here because five years on, like it or not, this is the front line, and I am going to make damn sure the alarm bell is rung.

Your doing a good job Mike, a good man indeed.

How is being in Baghdad going to relive your guilty conscious?
What does Iraq have to do with the 911 attack?
Why are you NOT asking about the NORAD stand down.
Your guilt is misdirected.

Mike,
You seem to confuse the USA's defensive strike gainst the terrorists who are responsible for the 9/11 attack on the WTC with the USA's unilateral attack on Iraq which has never been proven to be directly or indirectly involved in the 9/11 massacre.
Had it not been for the USA's invasion of Iraq, you possible could still be there but not having to worry about waking up or experiencing a typical day that includes bombs rattling windows.
Gerry

If only the officials in the oval office and at the Pentagon, who did receive notice that an attack was imminent, had acted sooner you would not be risking your life right now reporting from Baghdad. That is the saddest fact!

Mike, I think we all felt a sense of guilt, but your warning would not have been heard by the people of power in our country. You should have no guilt. Keep safe. Not sure why you feel you should be in Bagdad though....

Mike,
I don't think your the one that should be feeling guilty, it is your Government that should feel the guilt of 9/11 and post 9/11 and this guilt should eat at them to the depths of their souls until the death! What happened on 9/11 was something that in my opinion was known about, someone at some level of governement new about what was going to happen but in order to line their pockets for the sake of money they did/said nothing. You should feel no guilt the only guilt felt is that of the people of your nation re-elected such a man, your President into office for another 4 years of death and fear.

Five years ago as I watched the attacks with my 16 year old son...I had no idea we would be saying goodbye to each other, now,as he heads to Iraq to join the effort.
A very somber day, indeed.

THANK YOU You for ringing the bell Mike.

To be perfectly honest, I am more afraid of Bush & Co. than I am of the terrorists.

Cheney says the war in Iraq was justified. No doubt he, Haliburton and anyone else associated with the effort are taking their "justification" to the bank.

Having said that, Mike, if it is your choice to be in Iraq today, then please stay safe.

Some people here may not understand how much power al-Qaeda has in Western Iraq or what would happen if Iraq splits up. But, the US commanders on the ground know and even most reporters in Iraq.

Iraq will decide if we have to deal with a destabilized wartorn Middle East with a terrorist base in Anbar and an Iranian state in the south of Iraq or a more hopeful Middle East.

If Saddam had links to al-Qaeda or not is more then moot at this point. Americans don't understand that, but people in the region do.

I think that you have to be in a place, wether it is in Bagdad or any other area of conflict, that you feel we the readers need to know what is the current situation.

Mike,
Please continue your work on the front line. Thank you for your efforts... please show us the truth... and the good our forces are doing. God Bless

Thank God for people like you. Don't feel guilty. My only son is also there with you. My prayers are with you

I wonder if more reporters had stayed in Afghanistan -- where 9-11 was planned and launched from -- and had rang the alarm about needing more troops, we would not be seeing the resurgence of the Taliban in the south.

But, people only listen to the news that fits their political agenda now days. It's unpatriotic to question the White House. Result, no policy or leadership changes in "the war on terror" have or will been made -- no matter how many alarms have been rung.

I'm sorry that your report was not aired before 9/11 also. I'm sorry that more questions weren't asked before we left Afganistan and invaded Iraq. What you can do now, however, is ask the questions and report the truth so that perhaps we can better understand other people, cultures, religions and with that knowledge we can assist those people in a manner to end this senseless blood bath. Hang in There.

I think the mission in Iraq is bigger than we can imagine, and not just about WMD's. Baghdad is the cradle of civilization and an important city to Muslims. It is likely they wish to set up the Caliphate there, ruling from China to Spain and beyond if they are not stopped. Muslims have also declared Iraq the battleground of WWIII.
Keep up the good work, Brian.

Thank you Mike for your hard work, and I would like to see your original findings on Iraq. Too many Americans refuse to pray for and have any faith in God and our government enough to support our efforts to suppress evil. Thank you again Mike.

The point is that YOU saw that the attack was pending and were trying to wake people up. The sad thing is that AFTER it happened, so many of our citizens are still sleeping. Seventeen U.N. resolutions on Iraq, Sadaam's use of gas on the Kurds, genocide, the refusal of Muslims to criticize other Muslims regardless of atrocities, etc. I fear the alarm will never go off for many Americans.

I thank you Mike for what you are doing, although I do not think you should be there... No doubt was 9/11 known by someone in our office but kept quite for the money in there pockets... Keep up the good work and be safe.

Ironic that George Bush has sent nearly 3-thousand Americans to their death in Iraq as misguided revenge for 9/11. Why are we not mourning THOSE deaths today, and pointing our fingers at the terrorist administration who arranged for the deaths of those soldiers - as well as more than a hundred-thousand Iraqis? Osama bin Laden's attack on 9/11 seems kinda small in comparison, doesn't it?

Hey Mike! I had friends and family tell me I was too old as well. It was almost 35 years between my tour as a Special Operations, Special Forces operator in Vietnam and my first tour as a private security contractor in Iraq in late 2003. Many looked to me for guidance and as the "experienced" one even though some had openly let it fly that their Dads "had also fought in Vietnam". At firt I was a bit put off and then I began to take a lot of pride in my experience, my role and my accomplishments and contributions to their safety. Good luck and stay safe.

A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER

THE INFAMOUS DAY IN 2001 WAS THE 11TH OF SEPTEMEBER
IT WAS MY 43RD BIRTHDAY AND I VIVIDLY REMEMBER
PLANES STRUCK THE TWIN TOWERS AND THEY WENT DOWN
THE EXPLOSION WAS HAUNTING WITH DEAFENING SOUNDS

A SURPRISE TO ALL WHO WATCHED IN DISBELIEF
EVENTS OF THAT DAY BROUGHT OUR NATION TO ITS KNEES
HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN IN AMDERICA, MANY WOULD ASK
POINTING FINGERS TO THE "DOERS OF THE TASK"

I AWAKENED THAT MORNING AND LOOKED AT THE TV
MY BIRTHDAY WAS NO LONGER JUST ABOUT ME
A TIME OF TRANSITION FOR ME AND THE WORLD AT LARGE
IT WAS A POWERFUL REMINDER THAT WE ARE NOT IN CHARGE

AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A DEEP LOOK INSIDE
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ABOUT TRUTH, FREEDOM AND PRIDE
IF WE TRULY BELIEVE IN HONOR AND PEACE
OUR OUTDATED IDEAS MUST LET GO AND RELEASE

THE TWIN TOWERS REPRESENT OUR OUTER SHOW OF STRENGTH
BUT HOW IS OUR INNER FOUNDATION AND WHAT DO WE THINK?
ARE WE LIVING IN OUR TRUTH WAY DOWN INSIDE?
OR DO WE BELIEVE IN STRUCTURES THAT REACH TO THE SKY?

THE WAKE UP CALL THAT HAPPENED AND SHOOK UP NEW YORK
GIVES NEW MEANING TO LADY LIBERTY AND HER TORCH
TO TRULY UNDERSTAND OUR OWN INNER POWER
WE MUST ALIGN AND BALANCE OUR OWN INNER TWIN TOWERS

AS YOU THINK ABOUT THE TERROR OF THAT DAY
REMEMBER GOD WAS THERE IN EVERY SINGLE WAY
REVEALING OUR VULNERABILITY AND NEED FOR BALANCE
SUSTAINING OUR INNER FAITH IS OUR DAILY CHALLENGE

USE THE POWER OF NOW TO STAY IN YOUR HEART
ALIGN WITH YOUR SPIRIT AND TRUST EVERY PART
LOOK FOR PEACE DEEP WITHIN YOURSELF
FOR IT IS IN THE PRESENT MOMENT THAT LOVE DWELLS

Mike, A lot of time has been spent over the last 5 years on what we could have done different. Just like any crisis this country faces more could always have been done. Unfortunatly, we spend to much effort in the blaming of guilt and not the solution. The move to attack Terrorism was neccessary even though it is difficult. Unlike wars of the past an enemy that is across the battlefield and easily found and destroyed is no longer a reality. The difficulty we are having in the Middle East just goes to show that terrorism is still there and just waiting for us to lower our guard. So please keep doing what you are doing, reporting the truth, and help keep us all safe as well as yourself.

Mike, we very much appreciate the risks true journalists take in trying to get the real story out the rest of the world. It can't be easy to be separated from your family (let alone placing yourself in perhaps the most dangerous region on the planet), while trying to convince the powers that be to allow you to cover the real news. As much as we admire what you're doing over there, we could certainly use a few more like you back here, on the home front. Stay safe, and get back to your family as quickly as you can.

If you have guilt about 9/11, why are you in Iraq? Shouldn't you be in Saudi Arabia, or perhaps Afghanistan?

Let Iraq self-destruct. Our glorious leader and his cronies tricked us into this invasion. Let them deal with it. I'm officialy 'not giving a damn' about the middle-east any more. If they attack, they attack. No more fear. No more gods. No more masters.

Many, many more Iraqi people have been slaughtered by our troops and guns and air power than were killed and maimed in NYC. I don't hear anyone in our administration feeling guilty about the horror that we, the USA, has unleashed upon the world.
