Prisoners plight
Everyday after lunch I go to the drivers' room to have tea. Usually most, if not all, of the Iraqi staff gather around at that time to discuss what's going on in the street.
Today one of the guys was telling us about his experiences when he spent a month inside a Ministry of Interior prison on charges of suspicion.
He said it was horrible to see tortured prisoners - they came in healthy and left barely able to walk. Prisoners with broken arms and legs were just left to suffer.
"Does that mean many prisoners may be dying there?" I asked him. The answer was simply "Yes, they are."
He added that if they wanted to kill a prisoner, but were unable to do it in there, they would release the prisoner and when he was on his way home, armed men would be waiting to assassinate him.
Doomed taxi
After tea, the minute I returned to the newsroom, my phone rang. It was one of our cameramen. He hadn't come in for his shift in the morning and we were worried about him.
In an upset and tired voice he told me that his uncle, a taxi driver who was married with five children, had been killed that morning along with three other people.
"What happened?" I asked him.
His uncle was driving three passengers he had picked up from the biggest Ministry of Interior prison in downtown Baghdad. They drove no more than two miles when gunmen surrounded his taxi and opened fire with machine guns, killing them all.
Our cameraman knew exactly why. "As you know, they couldn't kill [the prisoners] inside, so they finished them off outside. But why did they have to finish my uncle, too?"

Soccer offers brief reprieve
That place appears to be worse than before we declared victory in the war. I feel sorry for those people. We need to bring our troops home ASAP. That country was doomed the min. we "spread democracy"

We all were hoping that the end of Saddam was the end of terror for the Iraqi people, but I was sceptical then and I see daily that I was correct in being so. Why do we feel that it is our right to impose our beliefs on people who can't fathom them or understand freedom as we know it, as they are guided by their religous beliefs which by their nature leaves little to personal freedom.

I wish we would could see/hear these stories more on the national networks. It galls me to hear the politicians (mostly the republicans) talk about this war and what "we're doing for the iraqis" and how much we're "improving" their lives and then to read these stories (which are so COMMON!). How can our
American politicians deny this is happening; I will never understand. Thank you Richard Engle for bringing us the truth and I am so happy to see you when I do on tv because it means you are still surviving over there. I pray for you to have some sort of inner peace and good dreams when you can because i can only imagine the nightmares you are living with and always will. I respect you deeply for still doing this after all this time. My heart, thoughts and prayers are with all of the people of Iraq.

Stories like this help to explain why the country that we invaded hasn’t covered our troops with rose pedals.

Are there going to be any first hand on the scene reports? Stories told 2nd and
third hand do not support the truth and lack credibility. It is a fact that rumours run rampant in Iraq. How about direct reports from the legislature sessions and interviews with the various ministers. Here's a suggestion; an interview with young Sadr as to his intentions in bringing about peace to Baghdad? Haaa Haaa . Cynicism aside, wheres the beef?

Why are all republicans to blame for the actions of the Iraqi?

us gvmt had no concerns of iraqi's b4 the invasion, nor after.. only to gain control of oil n power. My prayers and my thoughts are with the iraqi peoples, the usa soliders who are used as pawns to do the dirty work of oil power war lords. Allah help us all..grant us peace.

It is sad...those people don't want to be democratic. I think that just like in Viet Nam we should not be there. At the begining I thuoght that the sacrifice of our troops was justified, but it is obvious that we cannot change other peoples cultures. Let's bring our soldiers home and take care of OUR country, and let those munsters "take care" of themselves; let's not be their accomplices in that horrible violence.
Jorge Ardon (Sent Jun 26, 2006 1:05:14 PM)
The reality is we are never going to be able to stop the violence. This is what these people have done for thousands of years. Maybe our presence helps a few people. My concern is the children can't get away from the violence. When you are raised in torment how do you change their future. They are being trained to hate all we do. God Helps Us All.

There is no way Iraq will embrace the democracy we as Americans enjoy. They are used to the sectarian violence that is ingrained in their minds since childhood and nothing can be done to change that. It is sickening to read the news where you see young children among the crowd cheering the death of our servicemen after a roadside bombing, bottomline here is those people are sick and should be left alone to kill themselves. Bring our troops back home, the Iraqi people will never be grateful for what the allied troops are doing for them to gain freedom, and they themselves can't comprehend freedom from what?

We are very lucky to live in the United State. I can see how so much killing can make a person crazy after awhile. In a sense I think that you don't know right from wrong after a while. God blessing to all the people who are suffering in Iraq. The bottom line is we need to get our military back here USA before we lose more of our people.

I have a great solution for Iraq. Let's cut and run. Lol. Go Lib!

I am sick of it all......why should we die to bring peace to a country that doesn't want it? Take the few that want to go and leave the rest.....

As an American, I want others to be safe & have their liberty. We can't give up on the Iraqi people. Not even when we hear these horrifying stories. My son-in law is in Iraq in the Army National Guard guarding people in a prison there. He will be back in the USA in October....I hope he comes back alive. Please pray for all of our people & the Iraqi people.

If you think the stories are horrible now that we have journalists crawling all over Iraq reporting every tragedy they can; what do you think it was like before when Saddam was still in power? Why do some people choose to pretend that Iraq is worse now? Do people really believe that? Iraq is not in good shape - but at least there is hope now. Hope is something that was never possible under Saddam.
Will (Sent Jun 26, 2006 1:15:55 PM)
This is a chilling story, and I'm sure it is indicative of the general zeitgeist in Iraq. Democracy comes at a price, but the people have to 1. want it, and 2. understand what it is! The struggle for democracy must come from within the country. It cannot be forced on people who don't even know what it is.

The comments to this blog illustrate that we, as a nation, lack resolve in tough times. Many here have said that "those people" deserve what they are getting. It is a minority of people that are doing these things! No different than the thugs we have running around our streets who will shoot someone for $5. I don't think anyone should have to live like that and I'm certainly not going to pass judgement on the people of Iraq because of what some of their thugs do. These are human beings just like you or I. The attitude that "this is not my problem" in our society sickens me. Some of you people should be ashamed of yourselves.

This is an example of American's simply accepting what the government claims, acting like so many sheep and refusing to think for themselves! So our government was able to convince us that invading Iraq made the world safer, while Bin Laden stills runs free. The leaders of our country haven't even the honor to admit they are sacrificing the lives thousands of Iraqis and Americans alike simply for oil. So the US imperialistically attacks an unrelated country and tries to force democracy! We should be ashamed.

If the sons and daughters of the rich (corporations)and powerful (senators and congressman) were on the front line, our troops would have been home a long time ago.

Unfortunaly these people only understand a hasrsh leader like Saddam.Perhaps we should brush him off, buy him a new suit and sceee--daddle out of there!!!!

You would think that we would have learned from Viet Nam. 58,000 deaths and for absolutely nothing. The people of Iraq do not share a desire for freedom. Let the hateful people that they are live in the hell that they seem to have a need to share. "Cut and Run" and if we feel threatened at some point, bomb them into oblivion. Then, never set foot on this hopless waste again. Let it become a place for wild animals and uninhabitable for the freedom minded.
John L Tinkham (Sent Jun 26, 2006 2:48:59 PM)
Blame, Blame, Blame- everyone wants to blame somebody else or something else! It's always the president's fault, or the Rebulicans fault.... have you ever wonder why the blame isn't being put on the people themselves? They haven't ever been taught anything other than violence, they were raised watching how Saddam handled things so what else do you really expect (children learn what they live and become adults who live that way and raise their childrent the same an so the cycle continues). Its a matter of showing them there is another way of life out there! Education is one of the keys, patience and tolerence is the other. It saddens me to think that so many people in the country think we should cut and run and thats what the Iraqi's need and want, people say this war has nothing to do with us, but I say learn some patience there is always more to a story than what you hear or read. What would have happened if we ignored or cut and run in World War II would we all be speaking German now? I support my troops and my President no matter what polictical party he is with!

Oh, how gullible people are. How quickly you forget that before the invasion they COULD kill these people in prison. It is funny how partisans are so fast to point their crooked fingers at Republicans.

No names...no proof...nothing to back up what is being printed or said. This could be just like other stories who in the end are made up!(and there have been a few)
If you canprove what you write..then you shouldn't write it!

There was far worse treatment of civilians under Saddam. Don't ever forget that. Iraq had no justice system of any kind, this is extrememly difficult for Americans to understand. We have grown up with laws and a police and court system that has protected us and provided us with the security to pursue our dreams. Let's help Iraq provide the same for their kids. Freedom is contagious!
